People started using saunas and hot baths thousands of years ago, but scientists are only now learning how they affect health. A sauna is a small room that is heated to a very high temperature, usually between 70°C and 90°C. In Finland, a country in Northern Europe, saunas are a big part of daily life. Many Finnish people use a sauna several times a week, often after work or school.

A Finnish study of more than 2,000 men showed that those who used saunas often were healthier. They had lower blood pressure, better cholesterol (胆固醇), and less risk of dying early. In a sauna, the heat makes your heart beat faster, your blood vessels (血管) open, and your body sweat a lot. This looks like exercise, and it may make the heart stronger. Some scientists say that sitting in a sauna is like giving your heart a gentle workout.

Saunas may also help muscles recover after sports. The heat improves blood flow and reduces inflammation (炎症). This means your muscles feel less sore and you can get back to training sooner. Heat can also increase special proteins that repair cells in our body. These proteins help our cells stay healthy and fight off damage.

However, scientists say saunas are not safe for everyone. People with heart problems or low blood pressure should be careful. Also, you should not stay in a sauna for too long, and you need to drink plenty of water. There needs to be more research to know all the benefits and limits of saunas. But for many people, a sauna is a wonderful way to relax and stay healthy.
